Included in CBLD 2010 are 15 hours of consultation to be used throughout year. These hours can be used by your board, board leaders, committees, or the GM in the way that best serves the needs of your co-op. Advice and guidance on Policy Governance, board structure, Board/GM relations, agenda design, group process and board facilitation are just some of the ways that CBLD consultants can provide support to assure that your board can continually improve. Consulting typically takes place by phone and email.

Examples of how co-ops have used their consulting hours:

• to plan for member engagement
• to understand and implement their decision to convert to patronage dividends
• to improve their board self-evaluation process
• to improve board process for acting on monitoring reports from management.

Some co-ops have allocated time to support the GM in preparing reports for their boards. Others have focused time on maintaining long-running study and engagement activities.

One used hours to stay focused on its role during a major store expansion; another has been focused on being great at its role in the development process in preparation for moving to a new location.
