In partnership with our friends at the University of Wisconsin Center for Cooperatives (UWCC), CDS is exploring cooperative childcare solutions in the Upper Midwest. Access to affordable childcare is a known challenge in rural communities, and the barriers are vast: inconsistent and unreliable funding, low wages and lack of benefits for childcare workers, the cost of real estate, and navigating regulations. At the same time, there is no shortage of interest and passion in addressing these challenges. Our combined teams are exploring cooperative solutions that support existing community-led efforts as well as opportunities for rural employers and businesses to support childcare solutions.
We are actively having conversations with folks addressing childcare issues cooperatively, including childcare providers operating under various models (such as nonprofits and worker co-ops), state agencies, and passionate community leaders. Does this sound like you or someone you know? We’d love to chat with you! Please email Julia Chamberland to connect.
